What do they chase when nobody is clapping?
Ambition is easy to film when there is an audience. This strand is about the other version: the hours nobody sees, the attempts that fail, the work that may never arrive anywhere. It is about the pursuit itself, held up without any promise that it pays off.
Who belongs here
A story is filmed through the strand that fits the story, not the one that fits the job. A tattooist is not automatically Marked. A farmer is not automatically Grounded. The theme decides, not the trade.
- A maker, musician or dreamer working mostly alone
- Someone whose ambition has no audience attached to it
- Work happening at unsociable hours, in a spare room or an empty building
- Someone still going despite no sign yet that it will come off
How these films are made
Every Echo film is observational first, with honest conversation woven through it. No narrator, no script, nothing staged. What changes between strands is what the camera is looking for.
The private work, with nobody watching. This is the entire strand.
The space exactly as it is. Nothing tidied for the camera.
One complete attempt, start to finish, however it goes.
The failures: the pile in the corner, the scrapped, the abandoned.
The film opens in the middle of the work with no explanation, keeps a failure in uncushioned, and builds towards the next attempt rather than a win.
Where the line is
At least one thing going wrong stays in the film. Nothing implies success is coming, because it may not, and that is the film.
The shape of a film
Every film in every strand shares the same four movements. What changes is the emphasis, never the shape. Most films run 3 to 9 minutes, and occasionally a story earns a longer treatment of 20 to 30. The story sets the length, not a format.

If it were you
People sometimes read a strand page, recognise themselves, and wonder what taking part would actually mean. Plainly:
- We film a normal day of work. Nothing is arranged specially, and nothing is tidied for us.
- We have a relaxed conversation, usually while you work. No script, no lines, no pressure.
- You can pause or stop at any point. If you change your mind, that is the end of it.
- You see the finished film before anyone else does, and we talk it through properly.
- No money changes hands, in either direction. Being in a film is never a paid arrangement.
Everyone who appears and can be recognised signs their own agreement. If someone would rather not, they are not in the film.
