Who is holding this together, and who is counting it?
Somebody keeps the group going, checks on the neighbour, runs the rota nobody else wants. It rarely looks like work and it is almost never counted. This strand is about that care, and about the tiredness underneath it, because a film that makes someone a saint has become an advert.
Who belongs here
A story is filmed through the strand that fits the story, not the one that fits the job. A tattooist is not automatically Marked. A farmer is not automatically Grounded. The theme decides, not the trade.
- A carer, or someone holding a family together
- Whoever keeps a club, group or community running
- Work that is unpaid, unnoticed, and would be badly missed
- Someone other people would speak about warmly if asked
How these films are made
Every Echo film is observational first, with honest conversation woven through it. No narrator, no script, nothing staged. What changes between strands is what the camera is looking for.
The care in action, in small gestures rather than big ones.
The people around them: the room they are holding together.
The invisible work: the phone calls, the rota, the admin, the lists.
Them alone, before everyone arrives or after everyone leaves. Often the film.
The film opens on the people being held rather than the carer, uses other voices as its spine, and ends alone in the quiet after everyone has gone.
Where the line is
Somebody else has to speak about them, or the film is incomplete. The tiredness is shown. Everyone identifiable gives their own agreement first.
The shape of a film
Every film in every strand shares the same four movements. What changes is the emphasis, never the shape. Most films run 3 to 9 minutes, and occasionally a story earns a longer treatment of 20 to 30. The story sets the length, not a format.

If it were you
People sometimes read a strand page, recognise themselves, and wonder what taking part would actually mean. Plainly:
- We film a normal day of work. Nothing is arranged specially, and nothing is tidied for us.
- We have a relaxed conversation, usually while you work. No script, no lines, no pressure.
- You can pause or stop at any point. If you change your mind, that is the end of it.
- You see the finished film before anyone else does, and we talk it through properly.
- No money changes hands, in either direction. Being in a film is never a paid arrangement.
Everyone who appears and can be recognised signs their own agreement. If someone would rather not, they are not in the film.
